Last night I had the privilege of being pitch side for the historic Sheffield FC 150th Anniversary football game. The team is the oldest football club in the world and as such they played a friendly against Inter Milan. The end score was 5-2 to Inter Milan and the crowd loved it. It was my first time shooting football and understandably my 30D just couldn’t keep up. I got photos I was happy with, but I can see why people buy 1D’s.
Sunday was the launch of the Clipper Round the World Race. 10 clipper boats, 1 world. Its a huge task and I wish everyone good times. There was a huge turn out at the Albert Dock, which was great to see. The weather was great in Liverpool but by the time I’d made it to Wirral it had turned cold and the Mersey was quite choppy. Some little boats out there were all over the place. I was slightly glad that I’d passed on the press boat, but to be honest I was very annoyed with myself for doing so. I had this stupid idea that the boat would be sitting in the Mersey for 3 hours before anything happened. It didn’t and I missed out. I won’t be doing that again. When the race ends in Liverpool next year I really want to be on that boat for the finish. Still, I felt I got some good shots out of it thanks to the 100-400. I had a run in with health and safety too. Apparently I couldn’t stand by the fences by Canning Dock without a life jacket. Now I found that annoying because I’ve stood there many times to take photos. On any other day its a normal place to stand and everyone takes a photo there. No-one needed a life jacket around Albert Dock, which was far more dangerous to stand technically speaking. I really should have taken the boat. Oh well, still I’m happy with the photos and good luck to the clipper crews. I met some people from Qingdao so I hope they win, but also I hope the Liverpool 08 boat wins for obvious reasons.
Yesterday town was packed. Liverpool fans lined the streets in their red shirts, singing songs and waving their flags. Street sellers were being cleaned out of everything a fan could need. The guy in this photo seemed a bit worried. Maybe he couldn’t find the pub he needed, maybe he was worried about the game, or maybe he saw me taking his photo. An interesting thing happened in town via the Mathew Street Webcam. From what I could see some guy collapsed outside a bar. The bouncers looked after him till the ambulance arrived. It was interesting watching it live online. The police presence was huge there too. About 8 on the street and 2 on horses. You can see why around the time the match ends. The street explodes. It’s a shame Liverpool didn’t win last night.
This was taken on Bank Holiday Monday, about an hour before Marcel’s image today from the same place. The reason why it looks so noisy is because it was heavily raining. You could see it coming across the Dee, a sheet of rain moving in. I was slowly heading back to the car trying to get as many shots as I could before the rain hit. You see not only did it start raining but the wind also picked up dramatically and the surfers went faster. This was taken at about the precise moment when the worst hit which is why I cut off the top of the sail. Those poor people had quite a walk ahead of them.
