In September this will open and Liverpool One will be complete. I took this from on top of the new Hilton hotel. Lovely view from up there. Rent a room when it opens. I realise this might be a little too ott for some people, processing wise. I was up till 3am throwing everything at the image trying to lessen the dark clouds. The simple fact was that the noise was insane. So I gave up. I did try cloning the good sky over the bad but I decided that it was a step too far. I wouldn’t be able to say that the sky was like that because it wouldn’t have been. Anyway, this is Liverpool One.
In other news a few months ago I worked with a student film maker from Cardiff to produce a short video on Liverpool. It was scary. Me on film, well that can’t be good. But I had fun. It was a really enjoyable few days. You can watch the video on YouTube. You can see footage of the exhibition too. Thanks and congrats to Emma for a great video. Also I’ve found that my ‘Port of Culture’ book is currently listed on Amazon. So if you saw the preview at the exhibition and wanted to buy a copy watch that link.
This is it right here. The moment when the curtains were drawn back on South John Street. I say street but its all pedestrianised. They say its not a shopping centre but an extension of the city centre. Its hard to say really but there is a shopping centre-esque feel to it. The multi-level street for example does remind me of the Trafford Centre. Its a good start though. The opening was big and flashy with dancers, performers and music. Town was quite packed, as if it were Christmas. It was a little surreal though, standing on the middle level of South John Street and looking down the “street”. It was like being inside the marketing photos. I also got to go up on top of the new Hilton Hotel to get some overview photos. Expect HDR goodness in a few days. It was a scary trip up in the tin can elevator that jumps at every stop. Oh and the railing at the top wobbles. But wow what a view. You can see right over Albert Dock, the arena and Wirral. It was almost a perfect day for it too. A little hazy but hopefully the photos are good. So all in all Liverpool One is looking good.
The Dr Who like Dadadang Drummers as part of Streets Ahead.
As part of Streets Ahead over the weekend they had performers in the windows of shops on Bold St by a group called Cacahuète. It was pretty cool to see and proved popular. The four you can see here were part of the slightly more expressive performances. I saw the guy on the right walking around Bold St in a loin cloth with a fake penis. He had just been visited by the police when I saw him. The girl on the right I saw in the lingerie store sitting in her underwear. She had been told to cover or up she wouldn’t be allowed to perform. I didn’t catch the other two performances. They had been told that some people have complained, and that they were being provocative. Apparently the Amy Winehouse styled performer had been asked to remove the cocaine looking substance. Sure write about it in the papers, tell the world about all her troubles but don’t actually put it right in front of people. I found it funny that its ok to have mannequins wearing sexy lingerie but not ok to have someone real model it. If she was in a bikini it would have been fine I’m sure. Pascal, who was the leader of the group, said that Liverpool was the “Capital of Censorship.” Bit of a shame to invite people to perform in the Capital of Culture and then censor them.
I’ve uploaded photos of the performances in question to Flickr so you can judge for yourselves. Probably the most controversial performer, which you’ll need a Flickr account to view and is NSFW. Same guy walking away. The lingerie model.
Bang, bang, bang… and 10 minutes later… bang! Some of the fire crackers forgot to go off. Pretty cool display to watch. Its the last day of Streets Ahead today. I only spent about 2 hours out there yesterday and well, I saw some odd things. On Bold St theres a guy in a short skirt playing tennis in Microzine. It’s not pretty. However, across the road there’s a woman in lingerie in the lingerie store. That is pretty. But then further down the road I found a guy in a loin cloth… Right. I ended up getting covered in sand inside the bombed out church, which isn’t really what you expect. Its a shame that this is only once a year.
Last night I was at Streets Ahead in Liverpool. I had no real idea what to expect and by the end of it I had no idea what I saw. Hands down, best event I’ve been to this year. It was fantastic to see. Dragons being slayed on St Georges Plateau, water being sprayed from on to of the column and some really crazy aerobatics too. The crowd loved it. They ran from the dragons and ran from the water, but ran smiling. Its repeated tonight and I urge everyone to go. 8:30pm till 11pm.
