Edmund Gardner Dazzle Ship lit up for Night of Heritage Light

Events 2 Oct 15

In a collaboration between National Museums Liverpool, 14-18 Now, Tate Liverpool and the Biennial, the Edmund Gardner was repainted as a Dazzle Ship back in 2014.

Last night, 1st October, as part of a nationwide event called the Night of Heritage Light the Dazzle Ship was lit up for just an hour. You couldn’t have picked a better night for it. The sky was beautifully clear with deep dusk blues and a crisp autumn chill in the air.

The event focused on lighting up several UNESCO World Heritage Sites around the UK. The idea was to promote lighting as both an art form and a science.

Celebrity Infinity in Liverpool with fireworks

Events, Featured, Liverpool, Ships 21 Jul 14

The cruise ship Celebrity Infinity docked at the cruise terminal over the weekend so people could visit the Open in Hoylake. Storms were predicted and I secretly hoped for lightning during the firework display. A crazy idea in all honesty as it would have made getting any photos almost impossible. I was lucky that there was only very light rain, but still had to wipe the lens every couple of minutes. I was even luckier to get the above panorama. There was a bit of rain in the photos but luckily not over anything that couldn’t be cloned out. Phew!

Fred Olsen Cruise returns to Liverpool

Client work, Liverpool, Ships 23 Apr 13

Good to see Fred Olsen return to the city, and a great day to start the cruise year off with. I’d quite like to sail into Liverpool on a cruise ship one day. Must be quite a sight.

Cruise ships in Liverpool – I

Events, Ships 18 Apr 12

It’s cruise season again and what with the recent 100 year anniversary of Titanic’s sinking and news that the cruise terminal will become a turn-around facility, I thought it might be fun to take a look at some of the cruise ships that have visited Liverpool over the past few years. I’ve been photographing the cruise ships for the council since the terminal opened back in 2007.

The terminal opened in 2007 with the arrival of the iconic ship Queen Elizabeth II. A beautiful ship and one I saw as a kid. That childhood event had an effect on me and quite possibly helped shape me into a photographer. I remember hearing stories about lenses that could see details in the Liver Building from right across the Mersey. Hearing stories of photographers falling backwards over camera gear while tracking a plane overhead. Most of all I remember seeing the gigantic QE2 sailing down the Mersey from the Egremont Ferry pub. It’s been a privilege to document ships on the Mersey these past few years and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Queen Elizabeth in Liverpool

Events, Ships 9 Sep 11
 (Pete Carr)

On a gloomy Thursday morning the Cunard ship Queen Elizabeth arrived in Liverpool. I was up early cycling down New Brighton promenade to capture the big ship as she turned in the river and docked. In some ways it was nice that it was overcast otherwise I would have been shooting into the sun. The weather changed and got better as the day went on. I also heard that Philip Schofield was on board.
